Seek professional support – An assessment and personalised therapy plan can help manage difficulties and improve communication and swallowing. Contact AK Speech Therapy today to discuss your needs.

Learn more about the condition – Helpful resources are available in the For Whānau section of the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association website. You can also explore our blog for more information.

Practice between sessions
– Regularly completing therapy activities at home can help maximise progress and support important goals for swallowing and communication.

Be flexible in communication – Speech is just one way we communicate. Try using gestures, facial expressions, writing, drawing, or visual aids to enhance interactions when speech is difficult.

Make the environment communication-friendly – Reduce background noise, ensure good lighting, and allow extra time for conversation. Facing the person while speaking can also improve understanding.

Encourage independence and confidence – Allow your loved one to communicate at their own pace. Try not to interrupt or finish sentences for them—patience and encouragement can make a big difference.

Monitor swallowing changes – If you notice difficulties, keep a one-week diary of the foods eaten and any challenges experienced, such as:

  • Coughing or choking during meals
  • Frequent throat clearing
  • A wet or gurgly voice after eating or drinking
  • Feeling like food is stuck in the throat
  • Holding food or tablets in the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Recurrent chest infections, which may indicate food or drink entering the lungs

If you notice any of these signs, seeking an assessment can help ensure safe and enjoyable mealtimes. It may also be beneficial to complete first aid training in choking response and CPR.

Prioritise enjoyable and safe mealtimes – Encourage relaxed, distraction-free meals where the person feels comfortable. Sitting upright, taking smaller bites, and allowing time to swallow fully can all help
